There are so many things here in India that are so different from the United States. I am constantly surprised by how they do things compared to how we do things. Example 1: to get to the colonies, we have to cross train tracks. if you ask how long it will take to get to the colony they will say somewhere between an hour and 2 hours. It all depends on the guy who is in charge of lowering and raising the bar to close off the tracks. That man lowers the big bars when he feels like there will be a train coming soon. he really has no way to tell so it is just a random guess. If you get stuck behind the bar, you could be waiting an hour before the train goes by. in the mean time, cars and motorcycles are lined up on the streets waiting. luckily we only had to wait about 20 minutes.
Left: us waiting for the train to come, Right: it finally came!
Example 2: when you want to shower here, you fill up a bucket of water and then use a little bucket to dump that water all over yourself. I dont really mind it i guess. It is definitely not as bad as i was expecting but you never exactly feel clean after.
Example 3: the children all sleep on the hard tile floor. I complain about how hard my little tiny mattress is here (about 3 inches tall with a wooden board underneath) but compared to the kids at the school and the rest of india we have very good living conditions.
Example 4: bugs. I hate bugs. but bugs are everywhere in India so you just have to get used to it. At night we go to the hostels and help the house mom calm down the kids before they go to bed. we read with them or paint their nails or let them play with our hair, or watch them pick lice out their hair for and hour and a half. You might be wondering where they put the lice after they pick it out of their hair (ps one of the girls told me that she has hundreds of lice bugs in her hair right now)? yep right on the floor in the middle of where everyone is sitting.
Example 5: people in india eat on a banana leaf with their hands
